Though open element air filter systems are effective for increasing airflow they have a few big flaws. First of all, open element air filters tend to make lots of noise, (this of course is not a drawback to those who think louder is better). Second, the production air boxes are constructed and located in such a way to protect your engine from debris. Open element filter systems expose your filter and your engine to dirt and moisture, the same dirt and moisture the factory air box is designed to protect against. Finally, most cotton gauze open element filters suck in more dirt and heated air from the engine compartment than the factory system. Some hot air open element intake systems actually reduce power output as the engine compartment heats up and robs your engine from the oxygen it needs for effective combustion. This is for those of you wondering why a foam filter is better than a cotton gauze filter. For years off-road racers have had to install pre-filters on their open element cotton gauze filters. This is because the cotton gauze filters dont do a good enough job of filtering out fine dirt and they have a tendency to clog up quickly and choke the engine of its supply of air. These pre-filters (like K&N sells for use with their own filters) is actually made of foam! True Flow did their homework and realized foam air filters can filter out more dirt, flow more air, and still be strong enough to offer a lifetime warranty!
