For years off-road racers have had to install pre-filters on their open element cotton gauze filters. This is because the cotton gauze filters dont do a good enough job of filtering out fine dirt and they have a tendency to clog up quickly and choke the engine of its supply of air. These pre-filters (like K&N sells for use with their own filters) is actually made up of foam!
